Duncan and I showed in the Pre-Adult Jumper division at the Sussex County Horse Show today--the first time I ever showed a horse of my own in an A-rated horse show! My primary goals for us were to a) continue to build confidence in the schooling ring (land of chaos, where Duncan constantly believes he will be smashed into), b) take a bolder approach to the courses, encouraging him to be in front of my leg more consistently, c) remember my courses without having to make corrective turns, and d) keep my position as consistent as possible. I feel that we accomplished all of these goals--we had some horses cut us off in the schooling rings (even, at times, when there was about a football field-sized area to turn in...they always turn in front of me! argh!), and while I could tell he wanted to jet one way or another, I reassured him that we'd survive, and he believed me. I remembered all of my courses just fine, and while I'm certainly not perfect, I feel my position is more consistent than it was in the previous show. Duncan was considerably more forward at this show; at times, he was acting the way he does at home when he's having a hyper moment. We got a funky distance to the red and white oxer in our third course, and he let me know by doing some mini-broncs on our approach to our next jump. I'm just glad he tuned back in and let me refocus him in time! We still have some funky lead stuff going on at times, but he did manage to do a complete change at the end of one of the courses as I was pulling up! I count it as a small victory each time he figures out that he CAN do this with a rider! :) We got 2nd in our first class and 5th in our third class, which was a speed class. I am very proud of him--this show had all sorts of potential to be scary and intimidating for both of us, and we kept our cool together. Thank you Jim (my husband) and Jen for filming! As you can see, I spliced their footage into one video, so you get to see each course from a couple of angles. Enjoy!

Yes, if he loses ...
Yes, if he loses confidence, he does that little chip-jump (which, if I react faster and get a little more leg on, I can avoid most of the time). Sometimes, it comes down to what's effective--your eq. may not be pretty, but if your'e staying on when your horse gets the deep spot and leaps 5ft, you're clearly doing something right! :)

Duncan vs. the Aqueduct Fence
It's been a while since Duncan completely overreacted to a fence, but he more than made up for it when he first laid eyes on a new fence in Katie's indoor. I was taking a lesson with Sheryl at the time, and we'd started doing a course. Everything had been pretty typical to that point—we'd already jumped this new fence in the other direction as part of the course—so I was completely caught off-guard by his reaction when we approached on the right lead. Wow, just wow. I'm not sure which noises I'm making and which are Sheryl's, haha. I got the wind knocked out of me on the landing, and I was pretty sure my hips were smashed. I knew the fun was just beginning, because I felt him surge forward. I desperately tried to get my weight back and to sit up—forget the stirrups, not enough time for that—and then he ripped a real good buck. That wasn't so bad, but it was enough to throw my weight off for the approaching turn. I was trying to fling my weight to the right to offset the force pulling me to the left on the turn. I was fearful I'd be getting smashed into the wall or, even worse, end up under Duncan's hooves. I thought I had it clinched, but Duncan brought his head up (which hit the side of my head) and threw me back to the left; realizing I had a good gap to land in, I finally let myself go. I hit the dirt feet-first, followed quickly by the rest of me. I just grazed the wall on the way off, but it wasn't enough to pose a serious danger. After my untimely meeting with the ...

Duncan: Lesson #6 w/ Katie, 05/17/08
***PLEASE READ*** This video was originally set to Paramore's "Misery Business." I was forced to change the audio. Please do me a favor and play the intended song while watching the video--I worked so hard to make it synch up, and I can't even begin to tell you how annoyed I was when I got the email telling me my video was taken down. Argh!*** Here is my sixth lesson with Katie, starring me and my 7 yr old APHA buckskin gelding, Duncan. Since we have our first show coming up (a schooling show in which we'll be doing itty bitty jumpers), we were practicing some rollback-style turns and just general timing/pace to jumps. Duncan was super-motivated today; due to the demands of my job, I only managed to make it out twice to ride this week, and it shows! The refusal at the small rolltop that you see about midway through the video actually was from our first approach to it, but I showed it later in the video to sync it up to appropriate lyrics. :) He even looked at it funny when I lunged him before riding, but oh well! At least I managed to regroup and get my butt back in the tack! The next time we approached was when he took that massive leap (the first time you see him take the rolltop in the video). He also did some happy hops after the second jump in the diagonal line (which he also did a massive leap over), but I ran out of space--I'll save that for another video! If you're wondering why I'm sitting kind of deep on that second jump in the diagonal line, that would be why ...
Hampton Classic Horse Show $30000 Sotheby's International Realty Challenge
$30000 Sotheby's International Realty Challenge In a hair-on-fire finish, Todd Minikus and Hillary Dobbs turned the $30000 Sotheby's International Realty Challenge into a horse race at the 33rd annual Hampton Classic Horse Show. In a timed jump-off, Minikus won aboard Pavarotti in 37.56 seconds. Dobbs was second with Marengo (37.79) and Minikus placed third on Presidente (38.25). Their rides were double-clean. One of the nation's premier show jumping competitions, the Hampton Classic continues through Sunday, August 31. The Classic hosts hunter/jumper competition for riders ranging from the youngest competitors in Leadline and Short Stirrup classes all the way up to Olympic veterans in the $200000 FTI Grand Prix. Show entries include two Olympic riders who flew in directly from the Olympic show jumping competition in Hong Kong: McLain Ward, a member of the gold medal-winning US team, and individual gold medalist Eric Lamaze of Canada.
Mel and Duncan's First Show

Duncan, 03/04 - 03/09/09
This is a collection of footage from our last few rides. Since we're going to take our first stab at the Level 1s this weekend, I have been doing careful prep work to ensure we're getting the turns we need and maintaining the pace we need for the slightly higher jumps (3'). Jen has really put me through the ringer with some of her course patterns--and I couldn't be more grateful. :) Duncan's answered the questions he's been asked with enthusiasm and panache. When the jumps get higher, he's also more consistent with completely changing his leads. In the footage from March ninth, I'm riding him in a French link pelham (he's usually in a French link elevator). I wanted to introduce him to the pelham for the handful of hunter classes we might do at a favorite local show of mine (no, I currently have no aspirations of doing hunters full time; however, those are the only jumping classes at that show, and the elevator is not an approved bit). He smoothly transitioned into it, and, if anything, went better in the pelham than the elevator, especially when it came to rocking him back for sharp turns. I am not interested in critiques--regardless of whether you're a subscriber, a person on the friend list, a random person from some distant land who thinks he/she knows everything about riding, etc. Spare yourself the effort, and spare me having to block you. :)
